Lokomotif Jepang
#16

Quote:There are basically two reasons to like a BBB (or BoBoBo) locos:

- You have a network with lots of lines equipped with light infrastructure,
so the maximum axle load is too low compared to the loads that must be
hauled;

- You have lots of line in mountain territory, and thus you need locos
with sharp curves tolerance (for the curves) and lots of tractive effort
(for the grades).

The two strongholds for the BBB designs are Italy and Japan, where they
cumulate both situations. Those countries could not pack all the power
they needed in a BB design without exceeding the maximum axle load for
most of their lines. On flat territory, a CC design would have been used
(SNCF CC6500, DB E103, SNCB 20, ...) but a CC design is too rude on
tight curves. Hence the BBB choice. Note that CC designs is now more or
less a thing of the past, because today's traction techniques (asynchronous
motors and GTO thyrisors) allows to pack enough power in a BB design in most
cases (DB 101, SNCF sybic and asytrit, CFF lok 2000, and so on).

The two most famous examples of locos with BBB design are the shuttle locos,
of course, but also, and above all, the swiss Re 6/6.

BBB locomotives can be articulated (like most of those you have seen in
italy) or not. I believe that the most recent BBB italian locos are not
articulated anymore. The shuttle locos are not articulated. The swiss
Re 6/6 are also not articulated, at the exception of the two first
prototypes (anyone knows whether these two are still in use ?).

Most European countries have never owned any BBB locomotive at all.
It is mechanically complicated - even for not articulated locomotives,
you must add some flexibility to the middle (◣_◢)┌∩┐ anyway - so it will
be avoided if a simpler design can fit the needs.

Kind regards,
Marc.
