The government has set aside Rp 1.28 trillion (US$130.56 million) to fix Java’s northern coastal highway (Pantura) this year in anticipation of the annual Idul Fitri holiday exodus, which will take place in early August this year.

Public Works Minister Djoko Kirmanto said in Jakarta on Friday that part of the repair work on the 1,316-kilometer road, which has been taking place since April, was 90 percent complete.

Further repairs of some sections of the highway, especially in Central Java, are still under preparation. “I have received reports that some areas in Tegal and Brebes in Central Java are not in good condition. I have asked my team to immediately check them and repair the damage because we are pushed for time,” he said.

The work also includes the reparation of eight bridges, most of which are located in West Java including the Kalimenir bridge in Indramayu, Cimanuk in Garut, and Pilangsari and Bandengan in Cirebon.

The ministry predicts that traffic on the Pantura will reach its peak during the two days ahead of the holiday, which begins on Aug. 9. Millions of people will return to their hometowns during the Idul Fitri holiday to celebrate the end of
the Ramadhan fasting month.

Djoko added that this year’s funding was higher than the Rp 1.03 trillion allocated in 2012 because the traffic between Banten and East Java continued to increase from year to year.

Currently, the number of heavy vehicles, including multi-axle trucks, traveling along the highway amounts to 50,000 a day, 150 percent over the road’s maximum capacity of 20,000, and is expected to increase by a further 10 percent a year in the future.

The ministry has spent almost Rp 5 trillion on maintaining and repairing the Pantura during the past four years.

“We are not going to cut the budget [for the Pantura] because it is the main highway across Java as well as being the backbone of the island’s economy. In addition, it is even more crucial when Idul Fitri approaches,” he continued.

He expects the much-anticipated Trans-Java double-track railway to be completed soon, which will ease the burden of the Pantura highway.

Contacted separately, the Transportation Ministry’s railway directorate general spokesman, Muhartono, said that the Cirebon–Brebes and Pekalongan–Semarang sections were almost finished.

He said that both sections were expected to commence operations during the Idul Fitri holiday.

“We are optimistic that we will have the double-track system between Jakarta to Semarang this holiday. This will automatically increase the capacity of trains, easing the burden on the road,” he said.

He also said that the ministry was speeding up the Semarang–Bojonegoro and Bojonegoro–Surabaya sections as they wanted the whole project to be operational in the first quarter of 2014.

When it is complete, the double-track railway will allow the current capacity of 64 trains per day to rise to 200 trains daily, and container traffic will also rise from 5,000 to 15,000 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) a week.
